Driveway Guides

How Much Gravel Do I Need for a Driveway?

Learn how to estimate gravel tonnage for a driveway and what Kansas property owners should confirm before ordering material delivery.

Planning note: Material selection and quantities vary by site. Confirm product specifications with your supplier or contractor before ordering.

Start with cubic volume

Measure driveway length and width in feet, then choose a compacted depth. Multiply length by width by depth in feet to calculate cubic feet. Divide by 27 to convert cubic feet to cubic yards.

Convert volume to estimated tons

Aggregate weight varies by stone type, moisture and gradation. A planning estimate often uses roughly 1.3 to 1.5 tons per cubic yard, but the supplier should confirm the actual conversion for the selected material.

Allow for compaction and low areas

Fresh aggregate settles into voids and compacts under equipment and traffic. Rutted areas may also consume more material than a simple average-depth calculation suggests. It is usually better to discuss the existing surface than to order from measurements alone.

Use the estimate to request pricing

Prince & Long Trucking's Material Volume Estimator gives you a starting quantity. Send the result with the delivery address, project type, preferred material and access notes so availability, hauling capacity and final tonnage can be confirmed.

Questions to answer before ordering

Be ready to provide the project address, measurements, desired material, estimated quantity, preferred delivery window and photos of the access route. Mention gates, soft ground, overhead utilities, steep slopes, culverts and limited turnaround areas. These details help prevent delays and allow the hauler to determine whether the requested placement is safe.

Local planning for Northeast Kansas

Soil conditions and weather can change quickly across Wamego, Manhattan, Junction City and nearby communities. Heavy rain may soften access routes, while freeze-thaw cycles can expose drainage and base problems. Build flexibility into the schedule and avoid placing valuable material before the site is ready to receive, spread and compact it.
